The first step in every breast augmentation journey is to schedule a consultation. Our Austin, Texas patients use this time to get answers to a variety of questions about surgery, recovery, and results. There’s never a wrong question to ask at a consultation. But if you’re unsure what to ask, here are 5 useful conversation starters for your discussion with your doctor.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

Choosing to undergo plastic surgery is a very personal decision. Only you can truly know if it’s the right choice for your goals and lifestyle. However, your doctor can help explain what makes a good breast augmentation candidate. Ideally, a patient should:

  • Be physically healthy, with no preexisting conditions
  • Be mentally healthy, choosing breast augmentation for the right reasons
  • Understand the potential risks and rewards of the procedure
  • Have realistic expectations about their results

What proportions are right for my body type?

Just as no two women are exactly alike, no two augmentation surgeries are the same. Breast implants should be used to complement your natural body shape, not look too large or out of proportion. Your doctor will analyze your body during your consultation and determine the best surgical approach. There’s more to implants than just cup sizeit’s also important to talk about shoulder, waist, and hip measurements.

Do you specialize in breast augmentation?

Not all plastic surgeons are created equal. Some are generalists, performing a variety of procedures, while others specialize in a specific area. Ask your doctor how often they perform breast augmentation. You can also browse their before-and-after photos to see how many past cases they display to get an idea of their expertise.

What are the possible risks or complications from surgery?

Breast augmentation is a very safe procedure, especially when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. But any surgery comes with a certain amount of risk. The most common complications include implant rupture, infection, and capsular contracture. You can research these issues online beforehand and talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

In terms of recovery, breast augmentation requires around 5 to 7 days of rest and 3 to 4 weeks away from vigorous exercise. Your doctor will provide you a recovery outline so you know what to expect from the procedure.

Should I combine my breast augmentation with a lift?

Breast augmentation is an excellent surgery for increasing the size of the breasts. But placing an implant inside loose, droopy skin won’t produce the best results. If you struggle with sagging breasts, ask your doctor about combining your augmentation with a breast lift. Using these two procedures together can add flattering volume while also making breasts appear perkier.

It’s normal to feel a bit nervous before your first consultation. But by knowing what to ask ahead of time, you can have an informative, efficient conversation with your surgeon.
