Turn Back The Hands of Time: Treating Hand Wrinkles

Other than our face, the most visible marker of our age can be our hands. Although we use our hands to complete nearly every task in our day, the skin on our hands is frequently forgotten.  It is easy to forget the toll that daily use and abuse can have on them, as well exposing them to daily environmental stressors such as sun damage and pollution!  From wearing sunscreen to following a meticulous skin regime, you work hard to maintain your health and youth, and your hands deserve some love too!

What causes wrinkles on my hands?

Just like the rest of you, your hands age as the years go by. As you get older, your hands begin to lose fat, your skin begins to lose its elasticity and volume, and your muscles naturally begin to atrophy.

This can result in protruding tendons, veins, and bones, wrinkles, and translucent skin that’s more prone to age spots. The appearance of your hands can add years to your age, making you look older even when your face remains youthful.

How can I prevent aging on my hands?

Although aging is inevitable, there are preventive measures you can take to preserve the youth in your hands. For starters, it is advised to wear sunscreen on your hands. SPF is essential because it:

  • protects against sunburns
  • protects against skin cancer
  • helps reduce signs of skin aging
  • slows down the skin’s aging process

Although we are used to hearing the importance of SPF on our faces, it is just as important on the rest of our bodies, especially areas with such sensitive skin such as our eyes and hands!

Furthermore, to preserve the elasticity of our hands, it is recommended to exfoliate and moisturize your hands. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, while moisturizing maintains the moisture and elasticity of the hands which is imperative for preventing wrinkles! Lastly, maintaining a healthy diet and staying hydrated can go a long way toward keeping your skin looking younger!

How can I treat aging hands?

As previously mentioned, aging is inevitable; however, our clinics provide many treatments to treat and slow down the aging and wrinkling of hands!

Sculptra

Sculptra is great for patients who are interested in stimulating growth of collagen in their skin. Sculptra is an injectable used to fight wrinkles and sagging skin by stimulating your own skin’s collagen production to help restore the plumpness of healthy skin. Collagen is an important structural protein found in connective tissue. Its function is to keep the skin firm, youthful and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, and this is primarily what leads to fat loss, wrinkles or sagging. It is important to note that Sculptra is simply a collagen stimulator, and Sculptra itself is not providing the any volume to your hand. Sculptra causes a reaction in the skin, which forms new collagen.

Dermal Filler

Dermal fillers are great for patients who are interested in immediate visible results!

Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are injected just below the skin. They work well with your body because of the main ingredient – hyaluronic acid. This naturally occurring substance is found in the body, and when injected, mimics your own HA. The gel-like substance in dermal fillers provides instant volume to the area being treated that last as longs as two years! This volume leaves the hand looking refreshed, plump, and wrinkle free.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

This technique is best for patients who are interested in removing dark spots and patches from the surface of their hands.  Synergy Plastic Surgery’s state of the art laser center features modern laser techniques that are finely tuned to stimulate production of collagen and elastin in the skin on a patient’s hands. Wrinkles can be diminished, and the skin itself regains some youthful spring and glow. Lasers also break down the melanin (dark pigment) in those dark splotches so that they fade and disappear, tremendously improving the look of your hands.

Fat Grafting

The procedure involves manually harvesting of fat from one area of your body via liposuction and placing it elsewhere. Fat grafting procedures have found a wide range of uses in plastic surgery, including cosmetic breast and facial procedures and are often incorporated into many common surgeries. Techniques using fat grafting for hand rejuvenation have been reported, with long-lasting results. Structural fat grafting for hands can be a delicate procedure because youthful-looking hands look full, not fat. The goal is to make the skin look and feel thicker, obscuring veins and tendons but not hiding them completely!
