What To Expect From Your Procedure

Fat transfer breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure using a local or general anesthetic. The first part of the surgery involves liposuction to collect excess fat from a donor area, such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. Once the fat has been suctioned out and purified in a centrifuge, it is ready to be transferred. 

Your surgeon will carefully inject the fat into various layers of breast tissue, using different angles and depths to ensure even distribution. Once they have built up enough volume, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures.

Recovery From Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Most women can return to work after a week of rest, though individual healing rates may vary. We will provide you with detailed instructions to guide you through your recovery, but here is what you can generally expect: 

• Swelling and Bruising. Swelling and bruising are common in the breasts and at the liposuction donor site. Although residual swelling can take months to subside, visible swelling and bruising should improve within a couple of weeks. 
• Compression Garment. We will ask you to wear compression garments for the first 4 to 6 weeks to encourage healing and minimize swelling. 
• Exercise. Most patients can resume exercising after 2 to 4 weeks, though your surgeon will advise you on your specific case. 
• Scarring. Fat transfer breast augmentation involves short, discreet incisions that heal well and leave small scars that lighten and fade over time. 
• Final Results. Noticeable results will be apparent as the weeks go by, but your breasts’ final appearance will need several months to become evident as the remaining swelling resolves.

Although breast augmentation with fat transfer can provide long-lasting results, not all fat cells will survive the transfer. In addition, the natural aging process, weight and hormone fluctuations, and other factors can affect long-term results. Some patients may require touch-up procedures over time to maintain or adjust their results. 

Can I achieve a significant increase in breast size with fat transfer? 

Fat transfer provides only a modest increase in breast size (usually 1 to 2 cup sizes) and depends on the amount of donor fat available. Patients interested in a more substantial enhancement may be better candidates for traditional breast augmentation with implants.
